Deeds, correspondence, account books and other business records, legal records, church records, maps, photographs, postcards, canning recipe books, canning labels, and advertising catalogs. The bulk of the papers concern business and civic activities including farming at the Hewlett Homestead in Port Washington and elsewhere on Long Island; shipping between Long Island and the West Indies; sawmill, gristmill, and cidermill operations; manufacturing and canning; road construction; legal practice in Queens County and New York City; school boards; turnpike and bridge companies; stables; banking; and Christ Episcopal Church, Manhasset, N.Y. Early items include a deed, 1683, of George Hewlett (1634-1722); daybooks, 1714-1740, and other farm records of Lewis Samuel Hewlett (1686-1763); and receipts for forage for New Hampshire Volunteers, 1780. Also, early documents concerning slaves owned by the family, and correspondence (ca. 300 pieces) between Morris Treadwell and Tempie Russell, black servants of the Hewlett family, 1914-1915.
